Why
The Knight of Cups arrives with an offer. It is a water card, so what it reports is the emotion itself, before anything has been done with it rather than the whole of what they feel.
Upright and reversed
What it is like to hold this feeling.
A reversal is not the opposite of the upright card. It blocks it, delays it, turns it inward or takes it too far, and which of those depends on the kind of card it is.
Upright
The Knight of Cups arrives with an offer. This is the card of the declaration, the gesture, the person who is good at love and enjoys being in it. The feeling is genuine and it is idealised — they are moved by the beauty of the thing as much as by the particulars of you, and the two are hard to separate from the inside. At its best it is generous and openly affectionate. Its known failure is what happens when the reality stops matching the picture, which is usually the point at which this Knight reaches for his horse.
Reversed
Reversed, the offer is hollow or was withdrawn. Either the romance has outrun anything substantial, or a person who fell in love with the idea has met the person and gone quiet.
Reversed, a court card is most usefully read as the same temperament under pressure, or as that way of feeling in yourself rather than in somebody else. It is very rarely a bad person and very frequently an unbalanced one.
Why the suit decides the answer
Water does not feel the way the other three do.
The same rank in two suits describes two genuinely different states. This is the largest single fact about any card in a feelings position — larger than the picture on it.
Water is the suit that feels directly. A Cups card in a feelings position is reporting the emotion itself rather than what is being done about it — attachment, tenderness, grief, the whole of it, before anything has been decided or declared.
You will know a Cups feeling by how it changes with proximity. Water takes the shape of what holds it, so these cards describe states that deepen, spill or cool according to what happens between you rather than according to a plan.
Water confuses feeling something with doing something about it. A Cups card can be entirely sincere and produce nothing at all, and the sincerity is often used as evidence that it eventually will.
Where the feeling is in its arc

A Knight feels in motion. The state exists to be acted on: it arrives, it declares, it does something. Knights are the most legible cards in a feelings position and the least predictive, because a Knight describes the current charge rather than anything that will still be true once the charge has gone.
A court card describes how somebody feels rather than how much, which is why it is a poor source of reassurance and a good source of prediction

Knights are the suit in motion — the element at its most committed and least measured, going somewhere at speed, and here that faculty is applied to the emotion itself, before anything has been done with it. fire and water work against each other, and the friction is part of the reading: something in this feeling is at odds with the way the person is built to hold it.

Whatever it reports is what is actually being felt — with the caveat that early Water is famously bad at estimating its own depth. A relationship you are already in
Inside an established relationship, Cups is reporting the emotional weather rather than the structure. It describes how it currently feels to be in this, which can differ sharply from how well it is working. A Knight inside a settled relationship reads as a surge rather than a state — a renewed pursuit, or a restlessness looking for somewhere to go.
Someone who ended it, or who you ended it with
For a connection that has ended, Cups is the suit that tells the truth and the suit that resolves nothing. The feeling described is real and its persistence is not by itself a reason to expect anything. A Knight after an ending is the most likely of the four to come back, and the least likely to have thought about why it ended.
A feeling neither of you has said out loud
When nothing has been said, a Cups card usually means the silence is not indifference. Water holds; it does not announce. What it will not tell you is whether the holding is ever going to become speech. A Knight is bad at holding anything unspoken. If nothing has been said yet, it is because there has not been an opportunity rather than because it is being withheld.

- Feelings positions are the ones readers most want a particular answer from, which is exactly why they are the easiest to misread. If a card seems to confirm precisely what you hoped, that is the moment to check it against what has actually happened.
- One card is one input. A feeling that contradicts everything a person has done for six months is a card that needs the rest of the spread, not a card that has revealed a secret.
