What does Strength mean upright?

Upright, Strength carries calm courage and compassionate self-command. It is attributed to Leo, the fixed fire that rules by warmth rather than by force, and that is the pressure this card brings to whatever it lands beside.

What does Strength mean reversed?

Reversed, Strength reads as self-doubt or suppressed emotion. A trump reversed is a theme being resisted, delayed, or lived out privately. It does not leave when the card is upside down — it goes underground, which is harder.

Number 8 in the sequence

The Major Arcana are ordered, and the order is the argument. Strength is number 8 and its job in the sequence is the strength that does not need force. The second act opens by revising the first. What the Chariot did with control, Strength does with patience, and the sequence is explicit that the second works where the first stops.

It sits in the second act. Cards eight to fourteen deal with what cannot be controlled — circumstance, consequence, ending, and the revision of everything the first act assumed. This is where the sequence stops being a plan.

That position is most of what the card means. A trump read on its own is a theme; the same trump read as the step between the one before it and the one after is a direction, and the difference is usually the whole reading.

What reversal actually does here

A reversed card is not the opposite of the upright one. That is the most common misunderstanding in the deck, and it produces readings in which every second card contradicts the one before it. If you read without reversals at all, nothing is lost. Plenty of experienced readers do, and take the same information from the cards surrounding a difficult one instead. The common error is fatalism. A trump names a theme that is genuinely large and genuinely present, and none of that makes the outcome fixed. The card describes the weather, not the decision taken in it.

Tarot is a structured way of looking at a situation you are already inside, and its usefulness comes from the questions it makes unavoidable rather than from answers it does not have.
