Why
The Five of Cups is grief in the feelings position. It is a water card, so what it reports is the emotion itself, before anything has been done with it rather than the whole of what they feel.
Upright and reversed

A reversal is not the opposite of the upright card. It blocks it, delays it, turns it inward or takes it too far, and which of those depends on the kind of card it is.
Upright
The Five of Cups is grief in the feelings position. Something has gone — this relationship, an earlier one, a version of their life — and their attention is fixed on the loss. The card is specific about the mechanism: not everything has been spilled, and they are not currently able to see the part that remains. Whatever they feel for you is real and is being looked at through this. It is one of the few cards where the most useful response is patience with somebody who is being unfair to their own situation.
Reversed
Reversed, they are beginning to turn around. The grief has not finished and the attention has started to move, which is usually the first sign that something can be rebuilt.
Reversed in the middle of a suit, the feeling turns inward. What the upright describes as happening between two people becomes something happening privately — unspoken, unadmitted, and frequently invisible from the other side.

The feeling described is real and its persistence is not by itself a reason to expect anything. This early in the suit the feeling has not finished moving, which is why cards like this one appear so often for endings that did not feel finished.

When nothing has been said, a Cups card usually means the silence is not indifference. Water holds; it does not announce. What it will not tell you is whether the holding is ever going to become speech. Applied to something unspoken, at a Five the shape has proved too small and something has given.
